Ukrainian Grandad Enlisted In Army At The Age Of 80 'For His Grandkids'

Former Ukrainian first lady Kateryna Yushchenko reshared a circulating picture among Ukrainians during these times of war. It was a picture of an elderly man with a brown leather bag. His cap couldn't cover all his white hair and the wrinkles on his hands indicated just how many decades he's lived on this land.

Standing before Ukrainian military personnel, this man wished to be enlisted into the army at the age of 80 "for his grandkids."

Yushchenko shared the picture on her Twitter account and summed the story briefly, “Someone posted a photo of this 80-year-old who showed up to join the army, carrying with him a small case with 2 t-shirts, a pair of extra pants, a toothbrush and a few sandwiches for lunch.”

“He said he was doing it for his grandkids.”

Hundreds of thousands of civilians are fleeing the country as refugees to neighboring countries while others who stay take up arms and prepare to defend themselves and the country.

Ukraine has forbid men between the ages of 18 to 60 from leaving the country as part of martial law since the invasion began. Despite being outside the age range, however, this old man, whose identity besides his age was unknown, decided to volunteer for the army.

The military draft has also included women since last December when tension rose last year. President Volodymyr Zelensky has also requested to be quickly added to the European Union in his latest speech.

Russian citizens have also been pictured protesting against the invasion of Ukraine.
