DC Unveils First-Ever Transgender Character ‘Kid Quick’ To The Flash Comic Series

DC has unveiled a new version of the speedy superhero. Jess Chambers, named ‘Kid Quick,’ is described as a non-binary character who uses they/them pronouns. Kid Quick, the latest addition to the growing group of non-binary superheroes in the DC Comics Universe, will be joining Lee Serano and Doctor Endless, who both debuted in 2017.

The LGBTQ Characters in comic books are still pretty much a rarity, but there has been quite a significant increase in representation over the years. Kid Quick, who moves at a hypersonic speed, will, however, debut next month as part of the 80-page DC’s Merry Multiverse – a holiday-themed comic book anthology landing in stores from Dec 9.

Accordingly, Kid Quick will be part of DC’s Future Slate event in January and February 2021. Within this time, new comic book characters and even storylines will be launched to expand the representation of characters while also offering new plot twists.

‘There are so many flash characters in the DC Multiverse, and we knew anyone we added to the category had to be different from the rest. We’ve got this super-fast character, Kid Quick, and I thought Kid could be any gender.’ Writer Ivan Cohen reportedly explained.

While Kid Quick will be joining Earth-11’s Teen Justice Team in Future State: Justice League, The Flash, created in 1939, had hinged on a university student who gained super-speed after being doused in chemicals struck by lightning.

Nevertheless, Marvel comics unveiled two non-binary characters named Snowflake and Safespace but were criticized and dubbed offensive. But it turned the LGBTQ group has welcomed the arrival of Kid Quick. Spencer Harvey of GLAAD LGBTQ Group revealed the character would help reach new audiences that are not exposed to these identities while also accelerating understanding and acceptance.
