Scotland has announced that they're making feminine hygiene products free and will pass the new bill soon. This is to counter the prevalent stigma around periods and is taken after a thorough study was conducted over poverty for women and how sanitary products became scarce for them.
Plan International United Kingdom's recent study on poverty and women show that 15% of them struggle to afford sanity products with half of women age 14 to 21 feel ashamed of their period. These are the so-called period poverty as well as the stigma that has been plaguing women.
Scottish becomes the first country in the world to admit this issue and pass the bill that allows feminine hygiene products to be available for free.
Monica Lennon calls it as Period Products (Free Provision) Bill. After this is turned into a law, the Scotland government will have to provide feminine hygiene products for free to women in need.
This sets a record as well as a positive first step towards eliminating period stigma.
Women spend about $10 for period products monthly and this sets Scotland a record to admit the issue. Women living on low-income will have problems acquiring enough hygiene products on their own.
The Scottish lawmaker who suggested the bill said, "Menstrual Products are not luxury items, they are indeed essential and one individual in Scotland should go without period products."
Previously, the government has made female hygiene products readily available in school, universities and colleges in 2018. They spent £5.2 million to fund it. Local businesses are also influenced and have been providing these sanitary products freely as well.
But Scotland is not alone!
Other countries have also been battling poverty and encourage government to stop period poverty and categorizing the sanitary products to be tax-free. These countries are United States, Malaysia, Australia, Uganda, India, Nigeria, Tobago, Trinidad, Lebanon, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Columbia.
People are so happy for the great news!
