When it comes to who's hunting, lions are always on top of the pyramid. That said, it doesn't mean the prey are not equipped with the necessary weapon to defend themselves. Especially buffalo and if you've met one head-on, you know they are the kind of herbivores you certainly do not want to mess around.
A lion spotted in Nakuru National Park, Kenya was possibly hunting around a herd of buffalo. The lone male lion which probably failed in getting prey was instead being chased by the herd. And when we talk about a herd, we're talking about more than a hundred buffalo here.
Sensible lion knew this herd is up to no good. He climbed up the tree, hiding away from the buffalo.
The photographer was Neelutpaul Barua, 39, from Mumbai, India. He was touring the National Park when he spotted this amazing scene.
He said, "Cape buffaloes do fall prey to lions however, the tables turned this time around. A herd of close to 100 cape buffaloes chased this lion that ended up taking refuge on an Acacia tree. Power is often on the predator's side but today his weight was pulling him down-he wanted to be on higher grounds but kept slipping."
Indeed, the trees were covered in moss. If he had slipped and not hang on for dear life, he might be killed from the stomping.
The photographer continued, "Knowing he could not hang in there for long, he continued to snarl at the herd with the hope of a safe passage. But he was clearly outnumbered by the buffaloes that stood their ground - it was a game of patience. The herd lost interest in the pursuit and the ordeal ended when the lion jumped off the tree and ran for his life.
"Such moments in the wild are hard to come by and its uniqueness can easily overwhelm you - I had to stay calm, enjoy the experience and make pictures that would do justice to the opportunity bestowed."
Some people might think he's a scaredy cat. But he's definitely being sensible right here and he's survived to fight another day.
