Animals have been shown to portray emotional behaviors as humans do to a certain level. You've probably heard of birds who mate with that one partner for a lifetime and they can ever recognize each other's calls despite the similar appearance with all other birds. Other animals like elephants have been known to mourn the death of an important member of the 'big family'. Cats and dogs also show the same depressing behaviors when they lose their playmates or beloved owners. They might be driven mainly on instincts, but they are able to show love to a certain level.
