California Hospital Gives Kids Mini Cars To Drive Into Surgery To Ease Their Stress

Having surgery can be an extremely scary experience. Not knowing what the outcome will be can be downright stressful even for the strongest of us. But it's even tougher for young kids who have to be separated from their parents and wheeled to a weird place with funny smells and bright lights. This for a kid is equal to a horror movie scene.

Hospital staff can do possibly anything to ease the pre-surgery anxiety. What could be better than cruising into a theatre room in a toy car?

Hospital staff at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California came up with this ingenious idea to let their little patients enter the daunting operating rooms with big smiles on their faces.

The kids get to drive around the wards in cute min cars designed for ages 2-7 years.  The kids get to choose between a black Mercedes and a pink VW beetle and can be operated by kids themselves or by a remote control. They also come with functioning headlights and taillights.

The cars even have radios so the kids can choose what kind of music they want to put them to ease before surgery.

“When the children find out they can go into the operating room riding in a cool little car, they light up and in most cases, their fears melt away,” pre-op nurse Kimberly Martinez, who came up with the idea, said.

“In addition, when parents see their children put at ease, it puts them at ease as well.”

“It can be traumatizing for a young patient to be peeled away from their parents as they head into surgery, this truly helps everyone involved.”
