It took a whole team of firefighters to rescue a chubby rat that apparently got stuck in a sewer gate in Bensheim, Germany. After previous rescue attempts by the local animal rescue organization, Berufstierrettung Rhein Neckar bore no fruits, they enlisted the help of firefighters to help free her. The team had to prop up the gate, slide a rescue loop around the rat and eventually set her free from the torment.

Animal rescuer Michael Sehr said: “She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip- there was no going forward or back.”

While onlookers stood there wondering how so many people gathered to save a tiny animal often considered a pest; her rescuers didn’t mind the attention. Sehr added, “Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.

Even better, the rescuers have gifted a drawing of the rat surrounded by hearts made by the girls who discovered it.
